I like that way of looking at it, and I'd be interested to know what book this was, because it sounds like something worth checking out.

It's How to Write a Damn Good Novel by James N. Frey. The aforementioned claim was made in the second edition of the book (How to Write a Damn Good Novel II: Advanced), and I have yet to see the first one, but overall it's very good both for enhancing one's understanding of how fiction works and as an (opinionated) writing guide. :)
