When I have worries that I think are probably irrational, I ask people about it because it helps to hear from someone else that it's irrational. When I'm worried that a complete unknown might turn out to be the one possibility I'm afraid of, I go to other people because they will most likely come up with a whole bunch of other, more reasonable answers that don't scare me. So that's why it upsets me when they joke about the worst case scenario instead. I should have made it clearer in my OP just how creeped out I am (for basically no reason other than my paranoia blowing things out of proportion), but I didn't want "my problems" to be the focus of the thread.
