[Picture is Nono or Nowi from the videogame "Fire Emblem: Awakening". She is a Manakete or Mamkute, a dragon shapeshifter. She looks like a child or childish looking teenager with pale skin, long pale green hair tied in a high ponytail. She is wearing a bluish purple cape, a short purple vest with a pink bow that bares most of her abdomen, purple gloves, very short purple shorts, and mid-thigh high purple boots. She is wearing a huge pink bow on her lower back. She is jumping in joy, with one arm behind her head and the other outstretched to the air, and both legs curled up.]

I wish more Western games had cute character designs.

Nope.

Noooooooooooope.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Japanese characters designs, but that shit is everywhere in Japanese games these days, and if Western games did it too there'd be no variety left. (Similarly, I hope Japanese games don't start featuring the 30-something Brown-Haired Grizzled White Guy protagonist.)

This. I like that character designs vary. Never the twain shall meet, in a large capacity, I can only hope.

We could really do with some thirty something black haired grizzled japanese guys tho

.

ariakas: (lol hikawa)

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-08-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Never happen.

They are not kawaii. Or moe. And sexually frustrated shut-ins don't want to fuck them.

Actually

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-08-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Gatz does okay for himself as far as interested parties go. Of course unlike most grizzled protagonists, he's actually an emotional mess and even the one sucessfull sexual encounter we've seen him have had him was pretty fucked up, so not a lot of follow through.

And he thankfully has no interest in the lolis. (though some of them got interest in him)

Yes!. Though I'd like more variety within the 30-something grizzled guys, those guys are my type. I have a coworker who, while not as buff as most game characters, is relatively fit but looks like he's had a few too many bad nights in his life. He looks sexy as hell and I'm pretty sure he can do 300 points of damage on anyone who messes with him.

BTW, I like the cute anime characters too so more of them as well! Fuck it, I like all of the character tropes. I really do. Let's smash them all together so everyone can have a character to fan over. It'll be fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno I kind of want to see what a modern military shooter would look like if made by a totally Japanese team, I can't help but think they would need to hire someone just to smack the entire development team every time they tried to insert bat-shit crazy elements like Metal Gear Solid does. I am imagining a Call of Duty clone, where you keep seeing where the developers have to stop themselves from adding aliens, superpowers, and blatant anime tropes, in order to try and tell a cliche Western gritty war story with a generic western white soldier protagonist. I like to think that's how Valkyria chronicles started out and then just spiraled out of control from there until we somehow got cute anime cliches in a World War 2 story.

To be fair to the west, they do have some cute as hell stuff, it's just usually more often non-human characters (I.E. the MLP ponies), the west just doesn't have a moe equivalent; which depending on who you ask, could be seen as a good thing.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-08-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with that is that the Japanese team will add those elements because those elements sell to Japanese (nerd) audiences. I'm friends with a whole bunch of Japanese players of Western FPS games, but when they make their own fan characters and talk about what they'd really like to see instead of the grizzled Shootan Mans, it's inevitably bug-eyed moetastic 10-year-old girls with watermelon tits wearing miniskirts or just panties on the battlefield. (Basically, they want Call of Strike Witches.)

I love some of these dudes dearly, don't get me wrong, but I'd never buy that game, and neither would 99.9% of the core Western audience, and international players outnumber the Japanese audience by tens of millions.

I could write a whole essay about how most Japanese gaming companies have doomed themselves in terms of broader international appeal by targeting the core audience of extreme uber nerds at home, but hell several professional industry analysts have already done it for me.

THAT SAID. From Software has proven that your dream is possible, if extremely unlikely.

Wait.

How old is this character supposed to be?

Because she looks way younger than 18. No more characters like this please, this is more creepy than cute.

hold on to your seat

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
looks like a pre-teen, acts like a child, thinks like a child, but is a thousand years old and can have children depending on the player's actions

yay japan
feotakahari: (Default)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2013-08-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a thousand-year old dragon who looks like a little girl, and acts like a little girl, and generally is a little girl except you can marry her and get her pregnant. It's exactly as creepy and gross as it sounds.

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-08-04 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
oh Japan, never change.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah pretty much this, I don't know if you just found a random picture but using Nowe was probably one of the worst choices you could make OP. Japan has a lot of good designs for cute characters (male, female, human, and other) that aren't sexualized at all. Picking the character that looks and acts like a 10 year old that you can have a romantic relationship and kids with in the game because "hey guys she's totally really a 1000 year old dragon, no Really!, wait where are you guys going?" probably wasn't the best choice.
scarletmorning: (Fado is shocked!)

[personal profile] scarletmorning 2013-08-04 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. Her marriage supports could be nice if she wouldn't act like a pre-teen.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She acts surprisingly more like an adult in her support with Libra in this Anon's opinion. Thank God the Fandom is all for redesigning Nowi's clothing. So far, most of them are really cute and fitting for her localization personality.

Yeah, but one out of how many is not exactly a good quota. Those pics of her are cute, though. Those few extra clothes make her immediately less creepy.

(I like Libra. He has many good supports.)

well, it's not exactly like the example you posted, but imo the character designs for NCSoft's Wildstar have a couple o' bushels of cute (though more along the lines of Pixar's Up).
feotakahari: (Default)

I don't normally call "troll" . . .

[personal profile] feotakahari 2013-08-04 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But I find it suspicious that you chose a character widely considered to be pedo wankbait.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'd rather they didn't.

Don't get me wrong - I like japanese game [particularly jrpgs], but character designs like that would really not fit in with the way western rpgs are set up, imo, and in a lot, if not all, western games would really screw with the atmosphere.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I think the brown haired white guys in western games are more annoying and less creative than cutesy characters in japanese games.

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
they all look so similar. rugged dark-haired white guys in their late 20s/early 30s.

western rpgs bug me because of the overall sameness of the designs. i mean, if you're going to make a fantasy setting, where's the fun in making a fantasy setting where all the clothing designs look exactly like stuff taken right out of history with maybe a bit of an exotic twist? give me designs that are fantastic, that LOOK like they belong in a magical fantasy world.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Cute", like a child stripper.

[personal profile] blunderbuss 2013-08-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you ... really could have used a better example for this, OP.

But I definately see your point. Personally, I think the sweet spot is between both eastern and western styles; Japanese designs are cute and imaginative but are usually ridiculous and impractical, and western styles are more down-to-earth and cool but can be boring or generic. A mix of both is what usually makes a good design.
