Fandom Betting Pool?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of want to start some kind of "fandom betting pool". Obviously due to laws, distances, etc, there wouldn't be money involved, but I'm thinking the format could be a master post every week (or some such), and then people could reply to that with a comment titled with the name of the fandom. The subject of the bet would be in the text, and would specify what was being bet on (who, what, for how long, etc.) and how much was being bet (and since it can't be money, the easiest thing would be a certain amount of words on a fic of the winner's choosing, or art or a fanvid or what have you).

For example:

[Harry Potter, spoilers through Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)]

Sirius Black will die in the last part/climax of Book 4. If I'm wrong, I will write +1000 words for a prompt of the winner's choosing, in a fandom of the winner's limited choosing (i.e., a fandom that I am familiar with). The winner is the person who is closest to the timeframe. If Sirius lives, the bet is moot.

Or whatever else. Possibly it might be more structured, with a template or with something in the rules stating who wins, if it's one person or just anyone who's said, "I'll take that bet!" or whatever, and so on.

Thoughts on this? Would you be interested in something like this? Ideas for how it will crash and burn and ways to prevent that?

sounds like too much effort

these things are better when they're spontaneous

O... kay then. So no iteration of this concept would be a good idea, in your opinion. Ever. At all.

DA

Really isn't. Only the huge fandoms would really be able to do it, and even then it just sounds like a ridiculous amount of work for whoever does it...and not particularly fun beyond.

It sounds fun, though a bit hard to keep track of considering the number of anons here. It does need more groundwork - who wins, indeed, who can participate, what is allowed or not in terms of bets and prizes, and who's supposed to give the prize to the winner out of all the participants of the betting pool.
