Phantom Pain (and Ground Zero) could turn out to be interesting. You play as the big villain of the series, cool characters literally everywhere, angsty otp popping out everywhere already (and there isn't even a release date yet).

I say this game has all the potential required. (Can't wait myself...)

Seconding this. The super advanced graphics help too, and having actors (one is Kiefer S., but I wouldn't underestimate Atkins either) as the voice/face actors.

I hope it will not get crushed under the ridiculous hype surrounding it...

Oh god I hope so. I LOVE Metal Gear, but 4 and Rising got mixed reactions. I think V will be great and a needed change for the series. V is one reason I want a next-gen console... And I usually wait on those.

MGS has a limited fanbase, though, in terms of both game mechanics (some people simply find action games impossible, others find stealth games boring) and Japanese-ness (I know many, many gamers who are put off by the series' quirkiness).

I'd love it if that happened, though!

Ah yes, the Japanese weird sense of humor has been sometimes a turn off even for me (but NOT when it meant you could have the two main characters go on a gay date at the beach as a MISSION and have them make out...ahhh, good times) but this games looks different. I think they will need to tone it down if they want to write this particular story...hence the hope this one will be The One for me.

I adore Big Boss, Ocelot and Miller too much. Put them in a game together = explosions in my brain.

Ooooh, Snake Eater was the one for me. I had mildly enjoyed the previous two campaigns, but daaaaamn. If they can pull a repeat of that mixture of mature tone without losing the wonderful zaniness (i.e. instead of replacing it with asinine toilet humor like Sons of the Patriots) it will be aawwwweesome.

I admit that when I saw the trailer, I came.

ayrt

"I admit that when I saw the trailer, I came."
Me too, me too. I'm not proud of my biological responses to those trailers.

Ah toilet humor, not my thing. Snake Eater had a great balance, I agree. But MGS2 was great as well for me. MGS4 I didn't manage to finish because Naomi Hunter and Otacon gave me the creeps, ah and let's not forget the burping guy with a monkey (but Solid Snake FTW as usual). MGS1 was my first and my baby, Peace Walker was enjoyable and created some unforgettable characters.

This one has got to be amazing, I swear. I'll cry if it's not.

Yeaaaaaahhhh. Naomi and Otacon having aged exactly the same number of years but Otacon showing it and Naomi practically looking like plastic really creeped me out too. I mentioned this in a thread about Resident Evil, where Chris and Leon show the 17-some-odd years that have passed and Jill and Ada and Claire still look like smooth-cheeked teenagers despite the fact that they'd be pushing 40.

MGS2 was great, as was the original, but imo they both pale compared to Snake Eater and I played them all as they came out. (Haven't had the chance to play Peace Walker though because I don't own a PSP.)
