A little? I was older than most fans, had an English degree, and my "day job" was writing professionally, so when I wrote fanfic for fun it ytended to in-depth characterizations, complex plots, and yes, some darkficness now and again.

A few years later, when I got involved in "more serious" fandoms (about the time that YGOTAS started to came out) I was sort of embarrassed that I'd taken a show about a "children's card game" so seriously.

idk for a show about a ~children's card game~, YGO can get ridiculously dark and serious at times. it lends itself to serious fic very, very well because once you take out the game (and let's face it, how many fics really care about the card game) it has a very meaty plot and good, relatable characters. i know you said in the secret that you used to be embarrassed, but it's still a nice thing to remember sometimes. it's a series with a lot of worth, it just has a kind of silly framing device.

My first online friend, as in not just fandom, was a 30+ cool lady I met through a YGO:DM board. She wrote script fic with a lot of BDSM elements that flew over my gross teenage head, and it was pretty terrible fic tbh, but she was so fun to talk to that I actually looked forward to betaing her work (and original scripts later on).

She was a painter, although she had another job in retail for steadier income. I never thought of YGO as a loser fandom. A cheesy show, certainly, but the people I met were fantastic. And I really miss her. I lost touch when I dropped my old net handle for a new one, and I regret not letting her know I'm technically still around.

I don't think most people would think less of you. Seriously.
