I never watched the show/read the manga until way later, but I followed a YGO community on LJ because it was so much fun, and that inevitably led to getting into the series so I can actually join in. I don't know about talented or friendliness, but it's certainly one of the funniest fandoms I ever saw! (And no, not because of a certain abridged series, although I did enjoy some of the in-jokes that had.)

As first fandoms go, this one's pretty awesome. It's not like you have to openly embrace it, but here's one more person who doesn't think there's any reason to be embarrassed :3
