I mean, I have a general policy to follow people if they're posting stuff I like, and unfollow them if they post a lot of stuff I don't care about (i.e. move to a new fandom or something). Most people I know are chill about this, because things can clog up your dashboard very fast, and if you are the kind of person who can't or won't spend all day, every day, on Tumblr, then that means you have to be very choosy about who you follow to make sure you can keep up with fandom without missing out anything.
This is especially easy if Tumblr isn't your main/only way of interacting with other fans and people and knowing what's going on with them. Most of my friends, we keep in touch in other ways (or, I just keep their Tumblr URL bookmarked so I can talk to them when I want to/need to).
But if Tumblr is like, your entire life, then I think this leads to some people assuming that cutting yourself off from them on Tumblr = cutting yourself off from them entirely? And as such, if you don't want drama or to lose their friendship, then you kinda HAVE to tolerate them, but if they're posting stuff you don't like for whatever reason, this can become stressful.
Especially since fandom in general - and Tumblr in particular - is not only a magnet for people with various social, panic, anxiety, stress, etc disorders, but also an environment that kinda makes those traits in people...I don't want to use the word 'fester' but that's the only one I can think of. Not to mention that some people are just EXTREMELY emotionally invested in fandom, while the rest of us tend to see it as a very involved hobby.
So you get someone prone to stress/social misunderstandings/etc + highly emotionally invested, and put them into the same environment as someone who doesn't have those some sociomental issues and isn't as emotionally invested, and try to make them utilize their environment and behave the same way...
...shit happens.
(Also known as, here, see my frustration about everyone agreeing with a popular Tumblr user calling her parents asshole, oppressive tyrants because they started to restrict her Internet usage when she got bad grades. It's one thing to sympathize with someone because of bad grades and/or getting a much beloved pasttime cut down - not cut off, mind you, just cut down. It's another thing entirely to compare those parents to homophobes who force their kids to stay in the closet because of their bigoted views just because they are trying to help their kid's grades improve! I don't think I've ever unfollowed someone so fast as when I saw that. -_-)
