the marks seem to be open to interpretation, though

fluttershy's butterflies show both a delicate approach to life and her affinity for animals, and also her beauty I guess

Cherilee has a flower, but she interpreted it as "wanting to make children blossom into adulthood" by teaching

Rarity finds gems, but also wants to bring out the shine in other people

Applejack, okay, hers is an apple and she grows apple, but she associates it with family and stability

Rainbow Dash's is a cloud with a rainbow colored lightning bolt, and yet she won it in a race because she "pushed herself harder than ever before"

Twilight Sparkle's is just a bunch of stars, which show a talent for magic, but also could represent her bond to her friends as Elements of Magic, and I imagine she could derive other meanings from it if she wanted to

Celestia has a Sun, because she controls it, but she could also be seen as a guiding light, providing warmth to her subjects

and so on
