I don't think that the viewing figures would have been hit as badly as some had suggested if they'd cast a bloke who wasn't White, as long as he could do the right sort of British male eccentricity. If they'd cast a woman though, my guess is that there'd be an initial flurry of interest at the start of the run (people tuning in for the novelty factor) followed by a drop in viewing figures (as those for whom it was too much of a departure drift away); though they could bounce if the people drawn by the novelty factor decided to stick around.

If they do opt for a woman next time round it would probably be a gamble: with the potential benefit of a new direction being weighed against the risk that the shown might have to be retired or put on hiatus if things didn't pan out (switching back to a male Doctor probably wouldn't lead to a recovery in 'brand loyalty'). However, if there are signs that the current formulae is wearing thin then they may not have much to lose by trying something different.
