'Passion' vs 'something you hate' is a false dichotomy. (As is 'mainstream' vs 'passion'.) Many, many people find jobs they love that are not reflective of any 'passions' they had in their youth. I REALLY love my main career field and find it completely fascinating but to most people (including younger!me) it sounds far less interesting than it really is. Most things are like this, especially once you've been dealing with them a while and can enjoy all their complexities.

The real problem is that the world is very much not transparent in this regard; most work is in places we don't even think of. Most things that sound boring are actually anything but, provided you are willing to take an initial interest in them rather than restricting yourself to what you expect to enjoy.

Mainstream career paths offer A LOT of things that you can't get out of following your creative passions, such as health insurance and a 401(k) and career advancement and not having to be your own marketing team and business bookkeeper. Oh and being able to create things on your own time without ever caring if they'd be commercially viable, because you can fail as hard as you want to without worrying about money.
