Re: 28 - the backstory
(Anonymous) 2007-10-06 03:49 am (UTC)(link)How things got to be the way they were in that episode
After the bees were kicked out of Flutter Valley, there were a few generations of just bumming around. But during the reign of Bumble the Vindictive (in my version, the queens are all named Bumble, and when they die, they're given a moniker), all effort was put in reclaiming Flutter Valley, and Bumbleland essentially went to pot. Eventually, the queen was killed in a skirmish, and her daughter took over.
Queen Bumble the Clever never stopped resenting the fact that her mother left her with a rotten kingdom and focused all her efforts on rebuilding. She also forbid all contact with Flutter Valley and was quite strict with her own daughter, who would become Queen Bumble from the TV show. Before that, though, she often fought with her mother and made the childish declaration that when she was queen, she would do whatever she wanted.
In an attempt to make inroads with a nearby kingdom (for bartering), Queen Bumble the Clever went to visit with the king and queen personally, and never returned (no one in Bumbleland actually knows this, but she was killed by bandits). Thus her daughter became the queen while still quite young, and made good on her word to only do what she wanted. Instead of bartering, the bees started pillaging nearby villages, gaining their reputation for being mean and tough.
At some point in time, Bumble staged a contest, with the winner getting the privilege of being her right-hand bee. Sting, who spent most of his time building his physical strength (since he got bullied all the time for not flying) naturally won, but it was a close match between him and Pointer (hence why Pointer holds a grudge against him in the episode). And that's how it all went down.
