Well I got into it slightly in junior school, when they said there was this big dude with a hammer who hit people and made lightening with it (My teacher back then really knew how to bring mythology to life for the 10year old me)

That's significantly more juvenile and less... educated? appropriate? high brow? Whatever it is you're accusing the comic/movie fans of being, my love of mythology comes from a much stupider place.

Thing is, tho, I reckon I could out mythology geek you any day of the fucking week these days, so I suppose my point is something along the lines of "Eat My Arse, you elitist fuck"
