Heinlein? I think? This series was definitely not my favourite of his (actually I don't remember anything about it except that it probably featured incest and the multiverse). This is a really cute reference though :)

It was late period Heinlein, so that's a good bet (haven't read it myself, maybe once very long ago but I don't recall). God, fucking Heinlein.

However, IIRC, the actual "cat that walked through walls" part of it... was pretty much just Heinlein writing about his actual cat that he owned. Like, I'm pretty sure the cat was closely based on this own cat. So that's pretty adorable, yeah.
