(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)prolescivil servants and was not allowed to carry a gun/go out in the field because there is NO WAY she, or any other deaf/Deaf/deafened/HOH/wait what's the PC term that's in fashion right now person would survive in the situations posited in the show, or even IRL) is, or was a Christian. (Tbf, so am I, just not that kind of Christian.)A lot of the "happy ending" stuff was way too much "Gawd loves you" etc. and the workplace scenarios they posited were not even close to realistic, insofar as the accommodations they showed / coworkers / managers' attitudes.
And half the time, the allegedly smart, self-reliant main character ended up being just another Deafie in Distress that needs to be rescued. Either that, or it was Deafie Gets Into Wacky Hijinx O So Many LOLs. I really don't think the show veered anywhere close to the middle of that spectrum, it stayed on either end pretty firmly at all times.
Before you ask, yes, I watched the show when it was airing. I actually watched the reruns almost daily when I was unemployed for a brief spell a few years ago. Why, I don't know, but mostly because there was nothing else I could bring in with the rabbit ears that time of day (hey, I was unemployed, I gave up cable for groceries, OK) and I usually spent most of my time growling, and chucking stuff at the TV.
Sorry. That was a bit of a long answer, wasn't it? :-O

It's been a while since I've watched the show, but thinking back more closely, I get your points. I just needed a refresher!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)Cool. Like I say, I watched the show, repeatedly, because like OP, there's not much out there in the way of representation (except for Joey --- I think I mentioned upthread a few billion times that Joey is awesome, heh JOEY FOR PREZ yes pls) for working PWD. So even when it's not even close to accurate, and filled with stereotypes, meh. You watch. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 06:33 am (UTC)(link)Thank you very much!!! I started re-watching Sue Thomas a few weeks ago, and I've been trying to pinpoint what my problem is with it since then, but "Touched by a Deaf Angel" perfectly summarizes it. Thank you again!
