Thanks for the laugh, OP!

Seriously though, don't be ashamed. I live alone so I didn't even have that option the one time something scared me that badly. I had to read some Calvin & Hobbes then sleep with all the lights on.

Let's share stories!
I'm ashamed to admit that Paranormal Activity scared the shit out of me when I saw it for the first time and I was 23 back then. I have a vivid imagination and the things you can't see scare me the most.

When I got home from the theater everyone in my house was already asleep and it was almost 3 in the morning - demon hour.
I was so fucking afraid of falling asleep and waking up and seeing someone standing beside my bed.
So I turned on all the lights in my room, snuggled up in bed with a bunch of pillows and watched Spongebob Squarepants until 6 am. I then collapsed because I was so goddamn tired XD

I completely believe that cartoons/funny shit in general trump scary.

I think I was 20 when I read something mildly scary on the internet, and suddenly I was terrified. Like, all the time. I was especially afraid of a certain corner in my bedroom, and as soon as a was alone I was cared almost to tears. I started to worry that I was losing my mind (it could have been some super weird hormonal thing, becuse it was around that time of the month when I usually have trouble with PMS). It lasted for almost a week and only went away when I thoroughly cleaned that corner I was so scared of and did this little feng shui ritual thing to get the energies to start flowing properly. Then, poof, I was back to normal.

Maybe it ws just my brain's way of letting me know that it was high time to clean behind the armchair?

I once was playing the visual novel Saya no Uta, which is the scariest thing I've ever had to endure three times. For a few nights I went to bed terrified that in the morning I'd open my eyes and see everything covered in guts and blood.

I went through a phase a couple of years ago where I needed a night light on (it wasn't really designed as a night light, it was one of those neato fish tank lamps) because I stayed up too late reading creepy shit online and was having nightmares.

I got over it because the lamp broke and I was too lazy to buy a new one but the other night I read some REAL GHOST STORIES that my friend posted and kinda wished I had it.

Oh god. REAL GHOST STORIES stories. They have those kinds on threads on Fark at Halloween and I read the whole thread last year and it freaked me the fuck out. Some of the stories were just stories about what people who had night terrors or hallucinations saw during an episode and that was really scary.

Tell me about it. I used to be on a board that was all about nightmares, lucid dreaming and stuff like that. There was a subforum about the Boogeyman phenomenon. I almost wet my pants reading the experiences there.
People were talking about dark figures holding their hands at night and lying next to them and all that shit you really don't want to read when you're about to go to bed, haha!

MAN these were actually things that my friend experienced and believes in and like PERSONALLY I think when I start getting creeped out my imagination just creeps me out more and if I'm tired it doesn't help and I actually think that in itself is scary like, your brain is DOING STUFF TO YOU AND IT'S FREAKY. But I'm also not gonna throw out the possibility that there is SOMETHING we don't fully understand.

But also there was a reddit thread a while back where people described creepy things their kids did and there was this one that stuck out in my mind and sometimes I think about it at night and it scares me, and reading her stories made me think of that too.

We have a local myth about a huge, hovering (!) black dog/wolf here.
I never take a certain road after sunset because I constantly fear this thing and sometimes I get nightmares as well.
It's said that it will appear when someone is alone on that road. It will always be a few meters away from you but it will follow you somehow, hovering slightly above the ground. People say when you see it, it means someone close to you will soon die.

is it bad that my first thought was 'aw that sounds cute'?

maybe I was just thinking about the cat from night vale

hovering animals are adorable

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I had the same thought.

One of the disadvantages to having five cats is that they make weird and unexpected noises in the night.

One of the advantages to having five cats is that they make weird and unexpected noises in the night, so when there is a weird and unexpected noise my brain goes to "Dammit, what did Harry knock off the counter this time?" instead of "DEMON ALIEN ORGAN THIEVES!"
