So, under your definition, pretty much every protagonist or movie character is someone with great abilities since movie characters are typically put in a extraordinary circumstance that require them to be strong or smart or whatever.

The main characters in PR had great abilities (staring down monsters, working together, fighting skills)

...The entire decision for each one being chosen was a) can fight and b) work in a team. Hardly great abilities, unless you're counting the fact that each pilot is the top of the crop - which is kind of what you want.
