I haven't seen the McFayden version, but if he's playing Darcy as simply a very shy man, then that's badly off target for the character.

I wouldn't say it's simply he's a shy man; just that that's a bigger part of his personality than I remember seeing in Firth's performance. That he's still proud and has that aspect, but that's mainly the first impression, as it were.

(Oddly enough, the person who I think gets the best balance of pride and shyness was Vincent Kartheiser of Mad Men fame, who's been playing Mr. Darcy at the Guthrie theater in Minneapolis this summer. That was actually a really excellent production, emphasizing a lot of the humor of the original).

Uh... the reason why shyness didn't play a bigger part in Firth's performance might be because that isn't really Darcy's personality. He's pretty much the opposite of shy; his arrogant behavior isn't because he's flustered and awkward, it's because he's a tad conceited and is neglecting his manners out of excessive pride. Darcy acknowledges as much at the end of the book.

If you like a shy Mr. Darcy, then fair enough. But that's not actually who the character is.

Yes I felt McFadyen didn't understand Darcy at all. Whereas Colin Firth really got him.

He wasn't just shy, he was sort of shallow somehow.
