Uncanny valley, I think. Photomanips look bad because they look like photomanips. When they don't, people just think they're looking at a photo. It's like that comic art where people have their torsos twisted around to show their butts and boobs at the same time; even if you don't have any artistic training, something looks off. (The number of times I've seen bad smut photomanips where the necks and arms do fucking bizarre shit...)
