Your argument isn't valid either. Go away.

Someone talked about a deaf TV character the other day, and it made me think about how disabilities tend to be perceived on the internet, and how people have started to get really patronizing about it. Case in point - "look at this picture of a kid in a wheelchair. Your argument is invalid." Nope. Sorry. That's a picture of a kid, who happens to be in a wheelchair. Pretty sure the kid has other qualities you could mention. And then there were those Autism Awareness memes in April, that I know my friends who actually have autism would've hated.

As someone with disabilities, really sick of that.

somehow I'm not really getting your point even though what I'm grasping seems to be something I agree with (sorry I'm very tired xD) so if you could explain what you mean with the "kid in a wheelchair" example that'd be awesome.

Same.

Not OP

I haven't seen the wheelchair thing, but it sounds like the OP is basically talking about how the internet tends to define people by their disabilities [or mental illnesses, which is something I'm more familiar with], and completely ignore everything else about them.

Of course, I could be wrong - but I have seen that treatment around the internet a lot, both from SJWs and non-SJWs.

OP

Yes, exactly, and it's often done in an attempt to "raise awareness", and yet often the awareness is limited to pity (however well-intentioned) rather than understanding. That's not cool.

anon the anon above you replied to ;)

Oh God yes I completely agree with you on that front =/

OP

There's this meme where they'll have a picture of a kid in a wheelchair or with prosthetic legs on a racetrack, saying "your argument is invalid" - basically meaning their hardship makes yours zilch. And yet you've just defined this person by their disability.

Yick. If someone posted a pic of me - disabled, queer etc, as a poster child for how others have it so much better/have so much more ~trivial concerns, I would mentally punch them through a 50th floor window.

I think I get what you mean, and I agree. I've been irritated for awhile over it (and similar things, thanks ~SJW~)
