Paul Gross (who played Fraser and was also the executive producer later in the show's history) was quite aware of the slash following and as a result the ho yay was even more ramped up in the final season. iirc, when he talked about the famous "buddy breathing" scene he said something like "I hope the slash fans really enjoyed that one!"
