lol

lol @ you

lol @ you for describing blatant bullying as "overly-strict". there was no pedagogical purpose to the shit he did, he was just being fucking cruel for the sake of being fucking cruel.

Okay, what I don't get is if he was so fucking bad, bullying little children under his authority and all that, why didn't the other facility check his ass? Why didn't Dumbledore or McGonagall tell him to knock his shit off or else? If he was so bad, then they're worse for letting him go unchecked.

Not that it lets him off the hook but it sounds as though all the other adults with authority were complicit.

because Harry Potter is a weird melange of literary styles and also changes dramatically across seven books, and ultimately doesn't make any sense, mostly

i mean, that's the god's honest truth, if you want to get right down to it

you make a good point, the first books have lots of caricature characters, then it seems to get somehow more *adult and then we're back to caricature again and ... yeah

compare the tiny witty fun book about magic that is CoS with the bloated meandering monster about bureaucracy of OotP with the inconsistent, silly, bad romance of HBP

and then someone steps in and says - Snape is a great teacher, at least he didn't endanger the kids like Lupin! or wasn't unfair like Dumbledore!

Re: NA

Because Hogwarts is a terrifying place and nobody seems to have any actual concern for student welfare.

Yea, note the triwizard tournament, whoah. And why did they think that no one would put Harry Potter's name in since he's in Hogwarts and Voldemort's team is out to get him?

Are you serious? Did you see the other teachers Dumbledore let in to teach? Because comparing Snape to that parade really isn't helping his case.

Dumbledore apparently felt that horrible teachers were a necessary part of growing up. Further examples show he wasn't exactly big on concern of student welfare.

I think it might have something to do with British writing. I grew up reading Roald Dahl and you want to talk about reading many, many abusive adults along the way, and the kids in those books just accepted these things as how it was. Maybe that's just a theme in British writing in general.
