But ... Chuck/Raleigh IS the slash pairing du jour? Other ships also get a fair share of fics written about them (like the two guys in the secret and the film's main het ship), but Chuck/Raleigh is still extremely popular considering their limited interaction in the film. Because they're the two conventionally attractive, young white guys - I guess Idris Elba is too black and Max Martini is too old to be the fandom bicycle.

Not sure what it's like elsewhere, but on AO3, at least, Chuck/Raleigh is only the third most popular ship: 73 fics to Newt/Hermann's 167 and Mako/Raleigh's 130, and not far ahead of Aleksis/Sasha's 50. It's definitely not the juggernaut pairing that one might have anticipated.

It's really a shame that there's so little Stacker Pentecost fic, though. (I'll admit that I don't ship him with any of the characters in the film, either, but I am working on a Stacker/OMC fic that will probably get read by a grand total of 15 people.)

I wasn't aware that Newt/Hermann was that popular. As for Mako/Raleigh, the het shippers are usually not the same people as the slash shippers. Looking at the potential slash dynamics in the film, though, it's still odd that Chuck/Raleigh is more popular than Stacker/Herc (best friends, attached by the hip, but I suppose they're too old) or Herc/Chuck (codependent and messed up, but I suppose that's too incestuous to be a fandom favorite), and even Herc/Raleigh would make more sense than Chuck/Raleigh (but again, Herc is not as young and pretty as Chuck).
