Tumblr makes me feel so old. I don't understand how fandom works on there. Not in a community-building way, anyway. I just reblog stuff I like, follow people who interest me, and have anything I post that isn't a reblog ignored.

How do you make actual connections on there? I know it can be done.

Honestly, I don't think fandom is so much about making connections anymore. Which saddens me a little, honestly, because that was what I liked the most back in the day. It was never really about who so and so would get together with or the quality of some BNF's fanfic as it was the friends I made and being able to talk about something we all loved.

That said, I do think there is an advantage in that it's your own domain to share fandom thoughts and feelings, plus there's always a chance something will circle back to you. You can sort of do that on LJ, but while you will have people link to public posts, that takes more time than reblogging. So you don't have the more personal connection, but you have your own soapbox.

I totally agree. I came back to fandom after some time away, and it's like the whole landscape changed. I think Tumblr can be fun and easier to participate -- because reblogging/liking is so much *easier* than writing a whole original post about why people should read a thing -- but it's lost the communal feel, imo.

Maybe I'm just in the wrong parts of Tumblr, or maybe I'm just not outgoing enough, though.

I spend tons of time on tumblr, but I've never actually made any friends through it. Then again, I've been active in fandom all my life, and I've never really made friends through LJ, devArt, Dreamwidth, or various individual/smaller fandom-specific forums. I've always wondered how people do it, but maybe being an Aspie is part of the reason I've never figured it out. IDK

It makes me feel old too, but I've never been that good at making and keeping connections in fandom anyway--for me the fandom IS the connection.

And honestly, I know it's an awful thing to say, but the young'uns now just wear me out and make me not want to connect. Teens and young adults are generally more prone to angst and drama than their elders, obviously, but I just don't remember my generation carrying the overwhelming load of negativity I'm seeing now.

Goddamn, perhaps you're just too damned dumb to work it out. Spend less time complaining and more time contributing - then maybe you'll be involved in the community. Thats how it works everywhere, including tumblr

Ah, a tumblr user come along to dispense their usual rays of sunshine.

Seriously, why are so many of you such jerks?

Easy: Contribute to popular fandoms. Create gifs and gifsets and make photosets using quotes etc and voila!

The main thing: A "popular" fandom. My fandom life is based on a single actor nowadays and I get limited attention. But I sometimes make gifs etc for popular fandoms and my posts get hundreds of notes.

It's normal that Tumblr makes you feel old. Most of the users are like 14-20 years old, so....
