Yeah, I have zero faith in Moffat as a writer, but I love Capaldi so I know that at the very least, I'll enjoy his performance.

Exactly this! This is why I'd hoped it wouldn't be him, but now it is I can accept it because well it's Capaldi and the more he's in TV being amazing, the better.

I'm just wondering what/if/how Moffat is actually going to work The Valeyard into the narrative, given that, HEY, LOOK, IT'S TWELVE, YOU GUYS REMEMBER "TRIAL OF A TIMELORD WHEN WE TRIED TO SINK THE SHOW THE FIRST TIME ROUND?" *cough* /cynical

Then I remembered "The Geek Interpreters" and...yeah. My hopes ain't reaching exceeding heights, here.

With a bit of luck he won't? I don't think he should be allowed to do anything regarding Classic Who, or anything that's vital to the Doctor (like when he seemed like he was going to name the Doctor, that felt wrong). If I'm honest I'd don't entirely remember what he said, I was too busy freaking out because the rumours were true and Peter Capaldi was the Doctor.

OP

I guess that depends on whether or not "they" see the Valeyard as vital to canon and if Moffat is one of "them"? IDEK. I honestly think it will be a throwaway line or a goofball joke and that's it. I am basing this on the fact that's what BBC!Sherlock eventually turned into. But it's a huge, huge, elephant in the room; not least because they were trying to axe the show around the time of a "Trial of a Timelord" due to falling ratings, which is apparently exactly what is happening right now.

So, either way he goes with it, it's doomed from the start? IDK like I said upthread I'm cynical. I had no issues with Six, though, so likely will be the same for Twelve? I haven't watched any of Eleven since the last Xmas special. I tried reading the TARDIS Wiki to catch up and ..... yeeeeeaaaaahhhh. Even the episode summaries seem insane and haphazard!

I sort of wonder if Peter will have any input at all, because I knew he's a massive fan, so my hope would be he'd maybe encourage that not that happen? As far as falling ratings go from what I hear a lot of people stopped watching because of Moffat's casual sexism, and while I've enjoyed 11, it hasn't gripped me in a way 10 did, though I don't quite put my finger on why.

I wouldn't say 11's episodes were particularly memorable at all, and were pretty much all over the place, but I don't know, I just adore Peter so much that I have to hope he'll savage it. I do wish he'd become the Doctor after Moffat though he deserves better.

And yeah these are separate issues, but it all comes down to Moffat being sort of not good for things, doesn't it?

Yeah, but episode summaries almost always seem insane. The only time they don't is when they sound banal.

I think it's pretty faithful to Classic Who, since the first time we met the Valeyard we were told he shows up somewhere around the Twelfth Regeneration. So. I would've been disappointed had he not been brought into the show, and I think Moffat will do a really good job of it.

na I don't like Moffat for many reasons, but I think he has a good chance of writing a devious unexpected dark plot involving the Valeyard (IF he shows up). I'd be disappointed too if he didn't show up, and I get the sense most long running fans of the show have been expecting him, and Moffat is definitely a hardcore fan, given his long history of being involved in fandom before the new show was ever conceived of.

Moffat can do devious plots. I think he's sketchy on characterisation, I hate his take on women, and sometimes things are just up his arse with pretentiousness, but he can think up a twisty plot.

Maybe John Hurt will be The Valeyard?

Was the show trying to sink itself with that series? I thought it was in response to others trying to sink the show (Doctor Who on trial, etc). Unfortunately, it didn't really show the show in its best light in order to perpetuate it.
