I was coming here to say this was one change I didn't mind, but when you put it this way, I can see the problem. Keeping the original actor obviously would not have worked. People probably would have seen it as a mistake or oversight rather than as "This is Anakin as he would have been by the time he died, not as Vader or pre-Vader." Giving Christensen different hair and making him up to look a bit older might have worked better.

I actually scrolled back up to look for the "plank of wood" in the pic before I realized you meant Hayden Christensen. :)

Fun fact, George Lucas digitally replaced all the trees of Endor with identical trees only moved a quarter inch to the left.
