Oh dear. I've never really paid much attention to Doug's fanbase, but god damn, this video has made me really dislike it. Doug posted an article that criticized his SM review, sort of, on his FB page. He said he enjoyed it, but it seemed kind of sketchy to me. Queue the comments. Hundreds of people, mostly guys, defending his review and calling his "haters" everything from "man-hating feminists/feminnazis' to 'butthurt whiny girls'. I...don't understand what wanting positive female messages and more representation for women/young girls has anything to do with 'man hating'?

I get that they think calling a girl wearing a leotard and a miniskirt a 'stupid slut' over and over is funny, but I still don't see how that was a proper review? I know Doug has dropped the ball on research in the past (He watched one episode of Hey Arnold and then said the entire show sucked. Good job, Doug, lol) but this seemed really uniformed. I later found out he had only watched four episodes of Sailor Moon and then written his review. All of his complaints were about either the skirts or how Serena acts in the first few episodes. :S

He did kind of screw himself over when he made that vid of himself being a total dick to his co-workers/employer. I wonder how hard it'd be to get a real job, when that video is so easy to find? lol

I saw the video and he didn't really judge the series as a whole. If he had taken the time (probably the better half of a year) to watch them like Avatar, maybe he'd have more legit criticisms. I found most of them a little nitpicky.

It's pretty obvious he doesn't care at all about Sailor Moon, so the dismissive review was just... the next logical step.

I didn't think this would explode, but I guess it's cause SM isn't my nostalgia. He already raved about mine (ATLA), so I'm too happy to care.

It's not so much nostalgia as...instead of researching a review, he fell back on slut shamming and weak nitpicking.

It'd be like if I created a review for Animanics. I only watched four episodes, then made the review. I complained about the design of the Warner bros/sister, are they cats, bunnies, dogs?!, then I spent ten minutes complaining about child abuse (how could they lock up children!?) mixed with a diatribe about how America over-reacts to children acting out, then I complained about Wacko..."Why does he sound like one of those Beatles guys?!". I would end it with saying something vague, something like "Uh, I guess I can see how it might be positive for writers or whatever. I hate it, keep that shit far away from me!"

You can bet Doug would be pretty upset. The sad thing is, is that he wouldn't be called a butthurt man-hating feminist bitch for having obhections, lol

Yeah he barely researched. Yeah he nitpicked. He didn't care. Should he have not bothered unless he was willing to give it an honest effort? Maybe, but it's not that big a deal. He's also done it to other shows, so it's not like he has it our for SM.

Also I just went back and watched the review, and he never makes insinuations on Usagi's character based on how she's dressed. He thinks it's inappropriate to have a fourteen-year-old girl put in such a revealing outfit following a vaguely sexual transformation sequence. It's pretty clear he takes issue with it on a meta level, as shown by his elaboration on Japanese consent laws. You can disagree, you can criticize his lack of understanding as it pertains to Japanese culture (which he acknowledges soon after), but calling that slut-shaming is just knee-jerk and unnecessary... and kind of eye-rolling. His issue revolves around the girls being definitively underage but not treated as such. It's crossing the line for him, but maybe not for you. That's not wrong.

But keep saying slut-shaming. It had a good run, I guess, before no one gave a shit anymore.

I suppose you missed the part at the beginning where the 'formula scientist' says Sailor Moon's formula was "...act stupid, uses magical powers to look slutty..." Doug WROTE that. But keep pretending that he didn't, I'm sure it'll be true if you say it long enough.

Oh, and? Wearing what basically boils down to a ballerina's outfit is not "slutty". It's pretty eye-rolling that you're crying "nu uh!" because you feel that a leotard and miniskirt is "so sexual". I know this is a crazy concept, but Naoko wanted to create something that promoted a young girl's sexuality. Fourteen year old girls are at that age where they are coming into their own, and while males that age are often praised for "getting some", young girls are frowned upon for their urges. Serena isn't even shown sexually until the very end of the manga, where she's in bed with her soon-to-be-husband.

Honest question, why do you even care so much what this guy thinks that the mere fact he loved your favorite show is enough to make you forgive all? I've seen some of his videos and liked 'em enough but seriously, he's just some guy. He can have shitty opinions about things for dumb reasons too.

That would be a terrible reason, but it's not real, because I wasn't serious when I said that. Sorry my humor sucks. He could've hated ATLA, it would not have changed my defending him here. I'm bothering because I think the person above is spouting an opinion that is misleading and ridiculous, so I'm sort of arguing on... principle?

I know I never post so I must look like I'm super invested in this but. I'm not. I thought he was pretty unfair to SM. I don't support his opinion here 100%. I think he's allowed to have it though (in this particular case, not all opinions ever), without being accused of "slut shamming."

People like the OP are the reason these terms have such short shelf lives before they start to sour with people and get tossed aside. I'm objecting on that level too.

Don't you think in this instance it's fully deserved? Seriously, calling the silly magical look of Sailor Moon slutty, when the anime at least is clearly aimed at prepubescent girls who never even ping such a thing, is ridiculous and shows you have to be actively trying to find something to hate. It's sketchy pretty much every time someone criticizes a girl's appearance for sluttiness anyway, let alone in an innocent example like this. Add to the fact that he didn't actually watch much of the show, and that means we can at least shake our heads and call him on dropping the ball badly there.

...but it seems to me that he already legions of misogynistic jerks blindly defending him anyway! Your efforts surely contribute to a good cause there.
