Yes, someone finally said it! Women were forbidden from wear them, in at least the 17th century, because it was so costly to build dresses with skirts long enough to cover their feet. And because the Sun King didn't want anyone's legs looking better than his, but that's clearly beside the point... right?

Although I read somewhere they think the first iteration was for butchers in ancient Egypt, to avoid walking through the blood and offal of their wares.
