I think he's the better Doyle.

As to the actual secret: I don't see why...? I've always perceived them as one and the same character; the change is very natural personality-wise (well, not so much when it comes to appearance, but outwardly they're both adorable).
Still, I would be fascinated to see Laing's version of older Doyle. [actually, the more the merrier. Sometimes I kind of want somebody to film the last two episodes, even if it means casting someone else as both Doyle and the Doctor.]
On the other hand, Edwards probably makes for a more tender-hearted Conan Doyle; Laing's one isn't nearly as lenient towards Bell's antics, and in some sense may seem more badass. If anything, he's much closer to the novelization!version. [but then isn't the whole White Knight Stratagem affair incredibly badass?] Admittedly, I personally do not mind this change, partly because I friend-ship Bell&Doyle like burning.
Also, there is the quality of performance; and I would perhaps agree that Edwards is, well, not worse than Laing, but more monotonous. Sometimes I have a feeling that he always plays the same bloke who just happens to appear in different films.
But I would love to hear your reasoning :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)I liked both Doyles. I thought Liang was more believable in the romance direction and I guess I saw him as... happier? Besides the whole girlfriend dying and such. I found that it took me a bit longer to connect to Edwards' Doyle. I think they both did a good job, I just gravitate more to Liang's Doyle for some reason. Maybe he didn't emote as much? I was thrown when Edwards came in.
I wish there had been more stories about the two (with the same actors, but I would take different ones. Seeing someone else as Bell would be strange). The ending was very unfinished.

Yes, that will be because they actually planned seven episodes, but the series got shut down (supposedly) due to an interdepartmental war. I once encountered somebody who claimed that they only heard Richardson use the word "fuck" once, and it was in a conversation about the person who was responsible for the cancellation.
I'm still bitter about it, not even simply because they cancelled it, but because they needed to do it when there were only two episodes left to film. My headcanon is that these would contain the local Reichenbach Fall (which is depicted in The Dark Water, the third part of the novelization) and the destruction of Cream; although it does seem slightly unlikely that they would ever bring Cream into the equation again. I mean, the creators seemed to have forgotten him altogether after the pilot episode (although he's supposed to be out there still - what with Doyle shouting that "he will kill again").
It's a pity I was late to this day's f!s post - real life is going full steam ahead these days - but I was intending to write a comment on the whole Cream thing and post it to GC, even if only for the sake of thinking about it myself.
Laing is overall more emotionally healthy, I think, that might be why. Edwards is either melancholic or plain unhappy most of the time. He has this peculiar manner of smiling tremulously in reaction to both good and bad things that makes one wonder what the hell is going on in his head. He might also have become closer to the Doctor, because Bell, while not especially bitter, seems to have a grim air about him - he doesn't perceive everything evil around them as unnatural or worthy of amazement. [or that may be the book!canon messing my perception up. The TV version is a whole lot more optimistic, partly due to the fact that Cream mysteriously disappears, giving way to more humane antagonists]
I'm glad you liked both me and the series enough to make it, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I think Cream would have come back, even if just in the last episode. Maybe somehow connected to their last case. I could see it happening that way. Possibly Doyle never capturing him, but with a bit more resolution.
No problems. Real life has kept me away from answering this comment quicker. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Cream whenever.
I think you're right. I do think Edwards's Doyle and Bell were closer. It may also have to do with age, as his Doyle is far older than Laing's. I think the bitterness of time for sure comes into play as well.
I know how it is to love small fandoms, so I just like to share the love :)
