(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)Yes, that's all that matters. Shepard set out to destroy the reapers, and with the Destroy ending did so. The Geth were tools to be used in aiding the fight. EDI was a tool to be used (and not for Joker to get his jollies off). AI is to be used as tools.
If I had to sacrifice a viable race such as turians or asari or krogan? I'd weigh the future of the ENTIRE galaxy against just that race and still choose the destroy option. Why? The Reapers are gone.

Frankly I think your willingness to sacrifice entire races just to destroy another for no actual necessity (when peace can be achieved without doing so) a bit repulsive. And no, I don't have any great love for the Reapers. If I could have destroyed them without killing off an entire other race, not to mention a comrade (or possibly two), I would have done it in a heartbeat, but that wasn't an option. My personal distaste for Reapers doesn't outweigh the fate of another race, nor does it outweigh the goal of peace in the galaxy.
And I find your view towards AI to be really gross too, but I'm sure you expected responses like that...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)I understand that the goal is galactic peace, if it wasn't I wouldn't strive to achieve peaceful resolutions between certain parties throughout the series including the Geth and Quarians (hell, if I could have saved the Batarian in Arrival, I would have in a heartbeat). The solution to that peace (or a part of it) is the destruction of the Reapers. It's the only renegade choice I ever feel okay making.
I knew I should have kept that line that basically said, it was a war and no one comes out of a war unscathed from having to make not only difficult choices but even heinous ones. I don't want to sacrifice entire races to achieve peace but (in game) I would if I had to. I don't want to kill off Turians, Krogan, or Asari and am grateful that, for the most part, I don't have to make that choice in ME3. And I certainly don't want to kill off a comrade (unless it's Kaidan but that's neither here nor there) unless I truly have no other option. EDI is a voice on the Normandy and I'm not fond of her sex-bot platform, so I don't view her as a true comrade. Legion is gone, thus no geth is a comrade.
My view toward AI, though gross to some, is that they are not living, breathing, flesh beings. They were created to be used as tools. That is why I find it easier to choose Destroy. AI can be rebuilt. Any other race cannot. So I don't see it as genocide. I'd love for the Reapers to be destroyed and not have to sacrifice the Geth, but turning Shepard into a Reaper-Commander or saying, "You get a synthesis, and you get a synthesis, EVERYONE GETS A SYNTHESIS" just sits even worse with me. But that's just me.
I would never suggest you have a love of Reapers and am baffled that anyone would.

That is where we disagree. We were led to believe it was necessary, but then it wasn't.
EDI is a voice on the Normandy and I'm not fond of her sex-bot platform, so I don't view her as a true comrade.
We have VERY different views on that, then.
Legion is gone, thus no geth is a comrade.
In some playthroughs I believe Legion stays alive (though only if the quarians die?). That's why I said possibly two comrades, but not necessarily likely.
You seem to not see the vital difference between VI and AI. VI are tools. AI are self-aware. They have a mind and consciousness, just like a being of flesh. Flesh doesn't define life, imo. It certainly doesn't define sapience.
Any other race cannot.
Really? The technology that brought Shepard back from the dead, the technology that allowed Henry Lawson to create two daughters from his genetic material without them even having a mother, begs to differ.

honestly though i don't think any of them are really meant to be the "best." they all have catches and stupid bullshit attached to them, unless you personally don't mind destroying synthetics, or being alive forever and not actually killing the reapers, or turning everyone into organic "machines."
i get why bioware pulls this kind of shit, like they think it's realistic or makes you think about your decision or whatever, but a lot of people who plays games just want to have their cake and eat it too, damn it.

IAWTC. And it wouldn't have been super unrealistic considering what has happened so far. An ending that was basically "destroy but you're advanced enough to protect EDI and the geth from dying" would actually have felt LESS deus-ex-y than Synthesis did. I could totally see having a higher requirement level for it.
People HAVE died. We lost Anderson, Tali and Legion cannot both be alive, Modrin and Wrex can't both be alive (I think? not to mention Mordin living = no genophage cure), and depending on how much of a purist you are you might have lost people in the suicide mission or in sidequests in ME3. It's not like there hasn't been sacrifice. After so much emotional investment I really just want fluff and happy endings lol.
