I consider fandom as "reading fic." That's pretty much all I did. I wrote a Mary-Sue fic on notebook paper and read it to my brother, but never posted it online. I also wrote a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad Izzy/Ken fic. I didn't really interact with other fans besides my brother irl. I remember this site called Kel's Tavern that had good Tai/Izzy fic. It might still exist and the quality may still be decent.

I'm still hoping to uncover some Joe/Matt fic somewhere.

Digimon fic was my gateway into fandom and slash pairings, though I didn't really participate in the fandom.

That sounds like a fantastic way to start fandom! Younger you sounds so cute.

And I think reading fic counts as fandom participation.
