Change over time: it was worse when you were a kid

[personal profile] pantasma 2013-08-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was walking in flipflops and stepped on a bee. I didn't realize until I lifted my foot to see why the itch was starting to hurt and saw the stinger hangin' out, complete with bee guts. So apparently, getting stung by a bee isn't nearly as terrifying as my last experience when I was at the back end of a swarm. (Okay, so I only got stung once, but it was still pretty scary!) In fact, it was hardly even painful! It's like I have arches of steal.

Have you realized that something you were afraid of as a child doesn't scare you anymore? Or something doesn't hurt as much as you remember?

Doctors. My childhood led me to hate and fear them in equal measure. (For pretty good reasons.)

I still have some issues with dealing with doctors but I'm much better now.

No panicked flights?

I've never run from a room. My worst thing was when I was five, in the emergency room, and had to have three nurses hold me down.

Now it's chill and my issues have more to do with getting doctors to take me seriously.

Yes, instilling so much trust and security into our chilluns.

'Cause they can't tell the difference between funny genie and serious genie, or because they just brush you off?

In their defense they had to hold me down. There was no other option.

Brush off.

Wasp stings. They were excruciating when I was little, whereas they're just a minor annoyance now.

Conversely, I think nettle stings have gotten worse. I spent large portions of my childhood falling off of my bicycle into patches of stinging-nettles and shrugging it off. So I was really surprised this summer when I walked through a nettle patch and it really effing hurt.

Man, I've heard wasps are like being bitten my poisonous fire.

Aw, man, sorry, hon! (So many commaaaas!) Did the rash die down like it used to, at least?

Getting blood drawn.

Man, as a kid, that was like the worst thing imaginable. It was PAINFUL and CREEPY.

Now, it's no big deal. I even go to blood drives (the mere thought seriously squicked me when I was a wee one).

That's great! Especially if you do it often. They should give extra cookies.

Me too. The turning point came when I realized that as long as I don't actually look at the needle I won't faint.

Vaccinations or any kind of injection. I used to fear them like one might fear going to the gallows.

Now I'm all "Bring it on!"

Aw, I wish. I still have a phobic reaction (shudder) even thinking about it.

Go, you!
