The first HP film was pretty good in terms of characterization, especially with the deleted scenes where Harry was sassy. Then the characters started getting butchered. Like, almost all of the main characters. Not just Ron. My least favourite transition from book to screen was Snape but everyone creams themselves over Alan Rickman so they don't want to hear anything negative about it.
