I imagine it feels like a fuck you because you didn't just play invest countless hours into three games just for the galaxy you came to care about to be destroyed and some nebulous future generation of species you know nothing about to be victorious, hopefully, at some point. Basically, it was like "you'll save the galaxy our way or you won't save it at all". And I admit I fail to understand why they were so adamant about that.

But I did, and I was as pissed about the endings as anyone. I remember sitting in my apartment just gaping at the screen.

I love Mass Effect. It's my favorite video game series right now. I was emotionally invested.

But sometimes stories don't have happy endings. I think the refusal ending fits with the united-galaxy-fighting-overwhelming-odds theme. Because sometimes the good guys don't win. Sometimes a moral victory is all you can get. We become like the Protheans.

And maybe Shepard and Garrus totally fucked lots in the decades it took for everything to go to shit.

That argument doesn't really fly, because Synthesis is framed as a happy ending (as in, it pushes really hard to convince us there's no negative consequences to violating the DNA of every lifeform against their will, whereas Control, Destroy, and Refuse were upfront about their downsides), so "sometimes there are no happy endings" didn't seem to be reasoning behind refusing to provide just one ending where Shepard dies to destroy the Reapers while preserving all other synthetics.

If shepard waited to see if people WANTED him to do what was best for them, he'd never get shit done.

It would have been funny if Shepard's hubris in that regard ended up doing worse things to life in the galaxy than wholesale genocide. Talk about brutally realistic endings.

...if Shepard waited for peoples' approval to save their asses, we would never have gotten a sequel. Literally. xD
