Wait, are you trying to imply that Christians will go after you for making fun of other religions?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was a practising Christian, I did.

/snotty atheist colleague munching sandwich in front of fasting Muslim other colleague in Ramadan whilst lecturing him on his repressive religion. DNW.

And now that you're not a practicing Christian you don't?

I don't really think the Christians-defend-other-religions thing is as much of a thing as you think it is. Actually now that I think of it I can't remember if I have ever heard a Christian stick up for another religion except one time when a guy said Jewish people were "halfway there" and therefore less ignorant (and more deserving of respect) than other religions?

I don't really think it's a 'thing' either and I don't know where it comes from, but I suspect that there are certainly Christians out there willing to do it and that have done it (many of which I know).

Statistically there must be or it would be a 'thing' that Christians don't and I haven't really heard that thing either.

And unless I'm misunderstanding you wouldn't you know some Christians are willing to do it if you know some? Or are you saying you know Christians you suspect would stick up for other religions? /semantics over

Sorry for the awkward wording. The former.

Sorry for the nit-picking! Sometimes things stick in my brain, so thanks for answering! :D

Well, there was the vote for anybody but atheists in the military on the House floor last month.

*hand up* I will straight-up defend anyone's right to their own beliefs, because beliefs are personal, and really, mocking someone's religion or belittling it is just kind of a dick move.

(Okay, maybe Scientology. Because it was literally created by a science fiction writer, and...yeah.)

(I would like to think any decent human being would go after someone who did that. Then again, as an ESL teacher I was kind of rudely exuberant about Eid finally happening so I could drink water in class again without being cruel and disrespectful to my muslim population.)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-08-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
? I would think it would be mildly rude to eat in front of fasting people if there's another option but cruel and disrespectful for drinking water (in what I assume would be a non-ostentatious way)? That's kind of a stretch. And I say this as someone who partook in ritual fasting as a child.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
It was between 99 and 107F every day for the first two weeks of Ramadan here. It just seemed like it would be an exercise in cruelty to drink in front of them when they couldn't drink themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Muslims I worked with were allowed liquids. These were adults, not impaired by any physical differences or challenges. FWIW.

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-08-14 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
I never even thought about it being rude to eat in front of fasting people. Mostly because one of my best friends in high school was muslim, and every lunch period she would sit with us while we ate and never seemed uncomfortable.

Now I feel like kind of a jerk, but not too much because she dropped me as a friend pretty much as soon as she got an inkling that I liked the ladies.

I read it as "Christians are hypocrites who put on a public face of tolerance and acceptance but in private they congratulate themselves on their bigotry."

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
So assumptions then?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Experience, more likely.
