Do you intend to pay for your future children's college education?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Or would you rather they pay for it themselves?

Side question, did your parents pay for you or did you have to pay your own way? Or some slip in between

Pay for? No. Help with? If I can.

My parents paid for my undergraduate, I had to pay for my graduate. I also had a lots of scholarships, so it was reasonable.

I think it would depend on what school my future child would be attending and honestly, the smartest thing to do now is come out debt free, so I think I would try to encourage my child to go someplace where I would be able to pay for their tuition.

college is getting so expensive that by the time my kid goes to one, I don't think they'll be able to pay for college without some help unless they tried selling some of their organs. If I had the means, I would definitely help them pay for college.

My parents didn't really help pay for college (though they helped me buy supplies for college and kicked in for groceries every once in a while) because they couldn't really afford to, but I was lucky enough to receive so much financial aid and scholarship money that I would usually have around $2,000 refunded to me each semester that I would put into my bank account so college was actually profitable for me.

I have funds for both of my children to help, but I won't be able to pay for everything.

I had to pay my own way and then joined the military to have them pay off my student loans. It worked out OK but wasn't ideal. I think I'd almost rather still have the debt if I could take back those 4 years in the army.

Nope!

I also had to pay my own way. Getting your parents to pay for it is ... That's a very American way? Didn't cross any of our minds here. They've got third own debts and mortgages to pay off.

Like, if I needed it they would have supported my living situation and id pay them back, but my entire education goes into my debt for me to pay off in my own time
(20k to go!)

I'd help, but not cover it all. I earned a scholarship that covered half my tuition--at the modest local college, without room and boarding fees. My parents paid for the other half in the first 3 semesters before I got a job, then I paid for everything myself.

I'd also encourage them to look into trades...a college degree isn't the be-all end-all these days

I had a little bit of help from my aunt and uncle, when I started.

I don't intend to have children. The cost of college may have factored into that decision.

I would like to pay for it if I can. It really depends on where they go and how much we're talking about. I would definitely help them as much as I could.

My parents helped me a lot, but I'm also paying for some of it too. My parents paid for most of my community college education and I took out loans for university. My parents helped me with other costs too like school supplies and clothes.

I would have been lost without my parents and I really appreciate all the support (financial and otherwise) they gave me during my college years. I would like to extend that to my own kids one day.

Nope. I went to school with a full-ride, and my siblings never went to college because they couldn't afford to. They're doing just fine, so I'm going to say the same for my kids: college if you can afford it, no big deal if you can't.

Public college is better than private here, so nope. I don't intent to have children anyway, so nope again.

Help sure. As for in my own life, I had to rely on scholarships and FAFSA.

I don't intend to have children, but if I do, I expect they would need my help to get a college education in the U.S. unless there is a drastic change in trends in the meantime.

My parents didn't pay for everything, but they -- and my grandparents -- helped a lot, which is why I am debt-free. I'd want to give that to my kids, if I could. But they'd be on their own for beer money.

The current system is totally fucking unsustainable. I don't think it will be as difficult as it currently is to pay for college in the USA whenever my kids are going to college, and if it still is, I don't think I'll be living in the USA.

My parents mostly paid for my college.

If I have the ability (and the kids), I'll definitely pay. The pressure kids who have to work and study sucks and I wouldn't want to put my kid through that if I had the ability to keep them from it.

My parents had a college fund for me and we used it for my undergrad, and had enough left over for law school (along with the money I got from AmeriCorps and a fellowship).

I don't plan to have children so there's that money saved. What I would have spent doing that I can spend helping my parents in their elder years, since they're paying for the half of my college fees that isn't covered by scholarship.

Heh yeah, that's how I intend on paying my parents back for raising me and paying my way through university. They helped me get a fresh start into career land, with no debts and a degree, and if it pans out I'll buy them a place in southern Italy or something.

College education is free in my country and there's one in every bigger city these days, so I won't have to.

Only partly, i think. Nothing over 17k.

I had help at first, but after I'd been working and had my own money I was on my own. And even when they helped me, I had to pay them back.
