Why do people insist on calling something "stealing" when nothing is ever taken from the victim in that scenario? Why don't we call it cultural plagiarism or something, God damn.

You're right, it's not theft (and not really "appropriation", either), but that's just being technical, people understand that you're not literally making off into the night with someone's heritage.
