(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 05:32 am (UTC)(link)Everything on the planet earth has been stolen/used without permission in the past, yet that still doesn't justify doing it again, right now, when people are aware that it can be insulting and ignorant.
And nobody's saying everything has to stay in their own special corner. People respectfully participate in and join new cultures all the time - they marry, adopt, immigrate, etc., and that's just fine. Appropriation is when you treat someone's culture like a poorly-researched and disposable fad, with no consideration, and when that someone says "hey, you're kinda mocking my heritage all up in my face, man", you say some bullshit about "but technically it's not ~yours~ to begin with, so I can do what I want! :D"
