P/Q already was the only slash ship with any major presence as I remember it. It was still tiny though.

Picard/Crusher was the TNG ship. It was absolutely massive. It ran laps around every other type of fic coming out of the TNG fandom. I do wonder sometimes if that would still be the case if it were airing today.

I think nowadays we'd be having massive 'ship wars between the Picard/Crusher camp and the Picard/Q camp with the Picard/Riker team occasionally making it a mexican standoff.
