So I kind of saw it as Disney gradually getting back into their groove from film to film.

I agree with this. I would say that the songs of Princess and the Frog are better than the songs from Tangled but Tangled definitely had stronger writing in every other department.

In the end, I quite adore them both and definitely see it as the start of something great.

The Lion King does have a special place in my heart but it's certainly not the pinnacle of Disney, except when it comes to the box office. That's always going to be Beauty and the Beast, at least IMO.
