I am serious, I did watch the entire movie, and it absolutely bothered me.

I will concede that it probably would have bothered me far less if I had actually believed it was the only option, but see above about finding Mother Gothel the least threatening villain ever.

She actually stabbed a guy (and he would have died if it weren't for those magic tears or whatever) and threatened to keep her "daughter" chained up in a dingy room for the rest of her life with every intention of doing so. That's pretty fucked up. And it's more than some disney villains do

I understand not liking her as a villain but she wasn't exactly harmless. Throughout the movie, she proved to be ruthless, manipulative, and perfectly willing get her hands dirty by hurting people who stood between her and her ticket to being forever youthful. When I was first watching the movie, I half expected it to end with Gothel having a sudden change of heart and realizing that she really had come to care for Rapunzel in the 18 years she knew her and would step aside and let her be happy but she was just kind of a monster the whole way through
