But sexuality isn't a black and white all-or-nothing sort of thing. It's a spectrum, and most people don't fall completely on one side or the other.

If this is the first person of the same sex that Hypothetical Friend has ever been interested in romantically/sexually, then I could see HF viewing it as the exception rather than the rule, and considering him/herself to not be gay. Maybe it's just that HF is 97% straight rather than 100%.

Not necessarily though, at least not for everybody. I know some people who define it differently but that's beside the point. My point is that it doesn't say in the original post that there's no banging going on (or that the person doesn't want there to be) so I'm not sure where anyone's getting that from.
