Why is it unreasonable for them to not think of themselves as gay if this is the only person of the same sex that they've ever been interested in?

I think maybe they thought you were just quoting the OP and being like...a grouchy old person basically? Like "gee what century is this?! back in my day if you were into the same sex you were gay! but you kids nowadays are saying you can like the same sex and not be gay?! ridiculous!"

...or maybe I just way overthought it haha.

(For what it's worth I read it as saying you'd take what they said at face value because come on, it's the 21st century and we should be beyond trying to label what other people identify as.)
