Shiny "fuck you" songs aimed at the music industry or towards the world are my favorite. That's probably why Sara Barrellis' "Love Song" has such a place in my heart.

I loved that song so much more after finding out the back story. (I liked it before too.)

?

What's the back story? If you don't mind answering.

While some have pegged the frustration in the lyrics to "Love Song" as a veiled reference to the singer's struggle to deliver what she thought her label wanted ("I'm not gonna write you a love song/ 'Cause you asked for it/ 'Cause you need one, you see"), Bareilles said the real explanation is a bit more complicated."They had encouraged me to keep writing, and I just wasn't having any luck, and I was turning in the beginnings of ideas and snippets of moments of a song, and I was just getting a really sort of blasé reaction to everything," said the singer, who has had no formal musical training but always had a piano to plink around on at home. "I started to get really insecure about it, and then I got really pissed off at myself for caring what anybody thought. ... I went to a rehearsal space one day. I sat down and wrote something for me. And 'Love Song' basically wrote itself.

[Picture is the cover of the single song "Silly Love Songs", a song written by Paul and Linda McCartney and performed by the musical group "Wings" or "Paul McCartney and Wings". It has the image of a "W" letter with wings on the ends.]

I love this song. yes, it's a thick slab of seventies cheese, but I love it without irony. Because it's the shiniest, happiest "fuck you" in the history of recorded music.

Shiny happy "Fuck you!"s are my favorite. :)

...unfortunately, I have far too few... can we turn this into a rec thread?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably not the same, but I still think Carly Simon's "Your So Vain" rates up there on the fuck-you meter, although not geared towards the industry.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think "Silly Love Songs" was a fuck you to the industry, I thought it was a fuck you to John.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Cee Lo's "Fuck You" is too obvious, but someone had to say it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And Lily Allen's "Fuck You".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I love this one. It's so perky and pleasant. "*sparkles* DIE, BASTARD! *pixie dust* I HATE YOU *unicorns*"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for recommending this - I'd never heard of it, and now I adore it. :)

Quite a few of Ani Di Franco's are - toward exes (Untouchable Face), toward people who she felt sold out (Napoleon) and yes, the music industry (and I can't find the name of it, but there's one about meeting with a big record company who wanted her to change everything about herself, and she said no, and when she got up to leave she realized she'd got her period in the middle of the meeting and therefore was leaving a stain on their fancy leather chair.)

Mika's Grace Kelly is aimed at the music industry people telling him to be more like other artists.

Does Lupe Fiasco's "Dumb It Down" count? There's also Spray's "I Always Wanted to Say 'I Always Wanted to Say That'", but it's not exactly clear what it's a "Fuck you!" to.

Edit: And on the fuck-the-world front, there's "Lift Your Head Up High and Blow Your Brains Out".

If you're okay with foreign stuff, 2NE1's "Hate You" is my jam and the important parts are in English.

The FCC Song is nice too, though very pointed:

Queen's "Death on Two Legs" springs to mind immediately, though it's definitely toward the band's relationship with a particular manager than the industry itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Tom Petty's The Last DJ is a good one. Some Clear Channel Communications-owned radio stations banned it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Black Mamba by The Academy Is and Compromising Me by William Beckett - same vocalist, but he's solo now.

Sara Bareilles, "King Of Anything." Even shinier and happier than Love Song.

The store I work in plays it as part of the music mix. I've always found it pretty fun (and it's so upbeat I didn't even realize it was a "fuck you" in any way until your secret XD).
