And so he was.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
he was but it's sad that he's still better than a lot of male characters on tv today. at least Happy Days has the excuse of being nearly forty years old...

I thought he was supposed to be a parody of the over-the-top-horndog-who-is-still-charming.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
At first, he was.

How many men from the 50s/60s weren't? He was a character of his time created in the 70s which weren't much better.

[Picture is Fonzie from the TV show "Happy Days". He is a man with rosy light skin and short dark brown hair parted on the side and neatly gelled. He is smiling and wearing a white T-shirt with a dark brown leather jacket over that. It seems he is giving the viewer the thumbs up. There is a wooden wall behind him.]

I thought Fonzie was a sexist douche.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because Fonzie was/is a sexist douche. That's the whole character. A sexist douche who cares. Magical right?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
to be fair, he did do a lot of things that showed he wasn't a completely awful person. i remember that episode where joanie felt pressured to date a guy she didn't like and (iirc) he tried to rape her. fonzie threatened him and scared him away, then told joanie that she shouldn't feel pressured to date anyone who she felt unsafe around. it was moments like that which made him almost likeable. i just wish there had been more of them.

Yes? and?

If there's a male on TV that the writers want the audience to like, they will almost always be a sexist douche. Male Gaze isn't just limited to sexual stuff, you know.

In other news, bears shit in the woods.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
This is an unpopular current opinion?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
"(stereo)Typical 50's dude"... so yeah, he was.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
He was. He was, but I'm glad that he wasn't as bad as the writers originally wanted to make him [namely, a complete stereotype of greasers - which wasn't anything like Grease, before people assume that]. The actor put his foot down about that, so he didn't end up being a bully as well as a sexist douche.

First thing I did when I read that secret. XD
