This movie is so '90's and so fun.

I didn't realize people shipped anything but Peter/Amy, though.

Hey, it's a Ghostbuster!

More like "Mmmmm. Ernie Hudson."

"I said don't move or you're dead!"
"And I say I am dead, and I move."

I just realized I can't think of a single movie with a white woman dating a black man when the movie didn't revolve around their wedding. Although, ironically, I can think of plenty with a white man dating a black woman.

Well, that's my dose of "the world is a shitty place" for the day!

"Save the Last Dance" is a white girl/black boy romance, but it's set in high school, so voila! No wedding! Everything else about it is very... well. They tried really hard.

*wracks brain*

Damn! Maybe something Will Smith was in??

All I can think of is Fred/Gunn on Angel, which is TV.

The Pelican Brief (well, sort of)
The Bone Collector (again, sort of)
Love Field
Cruel Intentions (supporting characters)
O (and anything based on Othello, but, uh, they don't end well)
And, well, Jungle Fever.

Television shows (Leverage, The West Wing, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Happy Endings, etc.) seem to be a little more progressive about it than in movies. Although I think the white man dating a black woman happens more often on television too.

You are unfortunately right, that's a pretty double standard with a side case of trope here. There aren't much movies where this kind of relationship is just there, and doesn't end badly (like every Othello adaptation), or there isn't too much fuss made about it.

In Love Actually, Keira Knightley's story starts on her wedding with Chiwetel Ejiofor, so the marriage is not the endgame (althought the story's focus is of course on the groom's best friend).

In the Pelican Brief, there isn't a single, relatively sane reason why Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington didn't end up together (I think they did in the book), and still...

[Picture is the actors Ernie Hudson, Laura Linney and Dylan Walsh playing Captain Munro Kelly, Karen Ross and Dr. Peter Elliott in the 1995 movie "Congo". Munro Kelly is a man with dark skin and short curly black hair. He has a thin mustache and is wearing a short-sleeved white shirt. Karen Ross is a woman who has pale skin and long brown hair pulled back and is wearing a white blouse and a light khaki jacket. Peter Elliott is a man with light olive skin, short wavy dark hair and wearing a dark grayish blue T-shirt. They are standing one after the other in a jungle, looking at something off-screen.]

It doesn't matter how many times I watch Congo, I'm always disappointed that these two didn't get together in the end.

Bonus secret: I thought Congo was a great movie.

I just watched this recently and I kinda shipped them too.

I started liking this movie a lot more when I realized that it bore a passing resemblance to an H.P. Lovecraft story.

That made it extra hilarious.

I don't think I've seen this movie before, but heeeey young Dylan Walsh! (I miss Nip/Tuck.) Oh the hair...

Maybe I should watch this.

Anyway, ship on OP. Ship on.

We need to have a cheesy '90's action film stream and you need to come to it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I was frustrated that it wasn't as faithful to the book as it could have been, but it was an ok movie. I can ship this ;)
