Legend of Korra Question

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just curious, but was it ever explained why Korra was able to bend other elements so young (iirc when the White Lotus came to her home, she earthbended and firebended)? From the information ATLA gave us, most of the other avatars had no idea they were the chosen ones until they were around 16 and then that's when they started learning about the other elements. This has been bugging me for some reason and I was just wondering if there was something official said about it

That bugged me at first, but I kinda just figured the world had changed a lot and they might have broken down the old policies. Also, we don't really know about all the different Avatars. I'm sure even if they intended to tell them at 16, things didn't always run smoothly. As for her being able to bend the other elements, some kids are just early bloomers?

OP

That makes sense, I just thought it was odd that they did something like that without giving an explanation for it or mentioning it

I think from the writers point of view, they didn't want to rehash everything from the original series so they tried to think of ways to make it different as possible. We already know what the Avatar is so instead of having a character explaining to Korra that she was it and going through her getting used to that and accepting it, they just jumped right into the action.

The age when benders learn they can bend differs. Tarrlok and Amon were pretty young when they found out they could waterbend. Korra was very skilled at the physical types of bending, but air bending was the most spiritual. It's a big reason why she becomes so frustrated. (Her impatience, beat things up and ask questions later attitude being part of it)

+1 to her impatience

I can kinda see young!Korra getting frustrated or angry (bed time too early, not allowed play outside in the snow during a bizzard, boots too hard to get on, etc) and then accidentally firebending.

How old was Korra? 3? 5?

Four, I think? She's seventeen in the first book, and it said that she had been in the complex for thirteen years.

And yeah, I imagine she actually picked up Firebending really, really early. She has the perfect personality for it.

Yep! Firebending is the type of bending she uses most, which I thought was a nice touch with her personality. I think Bryke before the show aired that Korra was "A firebender in a waterbender's body"

I admittedly attributed it to a throwaway joke about Korra being a prodigy that the creators just hadn't thought through that hard (though that may reflect my disappointment with Korra as compared to AtLA more than anything else).

I always figured Aang having to master all four elements at twelve just kinda jump started something, combined with Korra's personality, and boom one morning during a tantrum she accidentally scorches her dad's eyebrows off.
