That bugs me so much.

I used to have a couple of co-workers who did that. One always seemed worried that other people would have their feelings hurt if she gave them a response she didn't think they'd want, so she'd take forever to get around to saying what she really thought. Only, she never seemed to consider that sometimes people honestly don't care what answer they get, or if they do, it's really not that big a deal and trying to soften the blow causes more irritation than the answer itself does.

The other was my supervisor and I found it really hard to respect him as any kind of an authority figure because whenever I'd ask him a question, make a suggestion, or present him with a problem, he'd make these shrugging motions and stay silent for a while, only to be really hesitant and wishy-washy when he finally did speak.

When I moved up into a supervisory role, I made an effort to always give people an immediate, direct response, even if that response is "I don't know" or "I will have to think about that."
