Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's a real pity! Yuletide can be a pretty good place to request -- or get a chance to write yourself -- when it comes to older movies.

(In the case of Some Like It Hot, there are a couple of fics available though!)

I came here just to say this very thing: I've heard that there have been some excellent SLiH fics done for Yuletide.

Oooh, fics from old movies... That would be awesome.

If you had the time and inclination you could set up a fest!

[Picture is actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon crossdressing as women in the black and white movie "Some Like it Hot". Tony Curtis has light skin and short brown hair done in curls, wearing a black hat, white earrings and a white shirt under a dark blouse or dress. Jack Lemmon has a sharper chin, light skin, blond hair done in slight curls, a bigger dark hat and is wearing a black dress jacket. They are looking at something off-screen.]

I love watching old movies. The only bad thing about it is that when you ship characters--especially one with potential like Some Like it Hot--and there is no fic anywhere!

I hope this isn't too off topic: http://www.videodetective.com/movies/the-vikings/393566
The trailer does have Tony Curtis (and Kirk Douglas) AND should have a special appeal to slashers... (Wait for the "forceful entering"... f-yeah!)

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-08-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Can't actually get the trailer to load -- but no matter, I love that movie so much!

It's a pity that you can't get it, because it has the most conspicuous (and hilarious and IN NO WAY UNINTENTIONAL) cut between scenes I have ever seen. But yeah, the movie has tons of hunky appeal still and deserves its own fandom. :)

ETA: Try this one from Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir-qULjD2m4 (just skip that annoying ad). The really interesting part is from 1:30 and onwards. XD

Daughter of ETA: And I have been THIS close to friending you before and now... just say the word, I dare you! :D <3

OMG - Lol, that was fantastic! "forceful entering" indeed!

Oh my god, that canon looked like a dick going into the building! LOL

I love that movie so much. I actually really wanted Jerry (Daphne) and Osgood to totally hook up. Since Osgood didn't care, I wanted Jerry to just go with it and marry him! Heh.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-08-17 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Me too!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I shipped Jerry/Osgood so hard. I mean, it was a (sorta) canon romance between two men in a film from 1959. And Osgood honestly didn't seem to care when he realised, and Jerry was definitely getting caught up in the romance at points too, until Joe reminded him that hello, you're not actually a woman, remember? It could totally have worked.

And I do like to think that the ending didn't actually disagree with that. It fades to black. We never hear Jerry's answer. Maybe he did say yes.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-08-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! We totally don't see him saying no, so ...he said yes!

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-08-17 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
They were actually pretty damn well-suited, tbh. Osgood would have been totally chill with Jerry's neuroticness and weird ideas, for one thing, which would have meant everyone would be happier. Thankfully, the movie ends so open-endedly we can totally tack this on to the end without changing canon!

....

I have watched this movie too many times, haven't I?

Heeee! Yes, they were!

Too much is never enough. :)

This is like, my biggest woe with fandom. More with old shows than with old books though -- I grew up watching a lot of reruns of shows from the '50s/'60s/'70s and know them and their characters far better than a lot of more recent shows. Seriously, where's the plotty/shippy/angsty/hilarious but longer-than-an-episode fic about old shows? I get that a most old shows that are still popular now are sitcoms, which are hard to write fic for, but still...be creative, people. Just writing fic for M*A*S*H isn't enough.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
What shows were you thinking of? Because I'm much the same, we grew up mostly on reruns too. Things like the old Mission Impossible TV series, or Sapphire and Steel, or Beauty and the Beast, or the 70s Incredible Hulk (I would kill for a decently long Jack McGee/David Banner fic), or Kojak, or UFO, or the original Charlie's Angels ...

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-08-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Haha I mostly watched the hit sitcoms that get rerun a lot (I guess sitcoms are hard to write fic for without genre-busting, but damnit, I still want it, especially with genre-busting. The less sitcomily-written ones, like Andy Griffith, would've been totally easy to do!) But IA about Misson Impossible and '70s Hulk. Also Dragnet, Columbo, and Starsky and Hutch. And I'm probably forgetting some more.

I also thought it would be cool to try to imitate the Twilight Zone style of stories, Rod Sterling narrator and all, even if that would be more like original fiction than fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I tended to favour genre shows, mostly action, crime or sci-fi. Or westerns, though they tend to blur together a little bit in my head and I can't quite remember which ones seems slashier to me than others (westerns were very slashy).

Oooh, yes, Twilight Zone! Also Outer Limits. But yeah, more original than fanfic. Those shows had some of the best sci-fi writers of the day, if I remember right.

There's a decent David Banner/Jack Mcgee Hurt/Comfort Slash fan fiction call: I believe In Harbours At End.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of old shows, so many of my biggest ships are couples from shows with zero shippy fic. Barney Fife and Thelma Lou, Buddy Sorrell and Sally Rogers, Richie Cunningham and Fonzie...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And if a movie like that doesn't have a fandom, just imagine how little of a fandom there is for 60's western classics! (I just want some fanfiction for the orginal Magnificent Seven movie... stupid TV series!)
