I never gave any thought before to why he seems so child-like despite having been activated for a while and attending Starfleet Academy.

I always assumed that he was even *more* naive and android-like when he was younger, we just didn't get to see it, plus he canonically didn't have any friends until he went to the Enterprise. But the OP's headcanon makes even more sense and would totally could have fit into Star Trek canon.

My headcanon reason for why he was still so naive and unfamiliar with humans despite being over twenty years old at the start of the series was that his previous captains before Picard made him work 24/7 and never allowed him time to talk to anyone or do anything fun.

What episode is this from? I don't remember ever seeing an episode where Data was discouraged enough to suggest that he shouldn't do humany stuff :'(

I don't remember the specific episode or incident, but I have a vague sense that something bad happened while he was "off duty" engaging in recreation of some sort, and he reached the conclusion (almost said "felt guilty") that if he had been working rather than engaging in nonessential activities, it could have been avoided.

Yup. It was 11001001. The Enterprise was docked and being refitted and the crew was on shore leave, and therefore Data was, perfectly reasonably, off somewhere trying to paint a picture that Geordi could see properly rather than sitting around on the empty, shut-down bridge. Of course, the ship wound up getting hijacked and he blamed himself, because while other people actually needed rest and relaxation, he didn't actually need it, he just wanted to paint. So he basically thought he was being self-indulgent.

Now this makes me think that maybe one of his older commanders actually said as much to him -- "Other crewmembers have to rest. You don't. What if a calamity strikes the ship while you were busy unnecessarily indulging yourself? Is that logical?"

I have only seen a few episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation, but even so, from what I know of Data, something about the simplicity of his logic and dialogue in that screencap is just so heartbreaking.

I could actually totally see that happening. Especially if one of Data's old captains was someone who later became one of those various asshole admirals. And I could also see early!Data feeling that it was logical decision for the safety of the crew, and not fighting it :[ Later!Data eventually learned that it was okay to stand up for himself, but he was very demure early on.
